Important marketing lessons learned from Covid-19

Updated: May 22, 2020

whether we like it or not Covid 19 is here and may not be going away for some time. The truth is the way we operate our daily lives may never be the same, and that necessarily doesn't have to be a bad thing. along with my social media business I am also a after school teacher and scrabble coach. I went from seeing and interacting with my students in person to talking to them through a computer screen everyday. As the person who is one of the more tech savvy people at my site I had an easier transition online then others. I realized some of my marketing skills and experience could be transferred and used to operate online, and I have some key takeaways from a marketing standpoint.

1.Relationships Matter

Now I know that everyone says relationships matter all the time but our predicament now more then ever proves this point. I know for a fact that without the relationships I formed with the students, their parents and the organizations that we partner with before quarantine, the transition online would have been much more difficult. We knew that if we were confused then the families were probably even more confused. We made it our mission to help the families as much as we could by sending them resources, answering their questions and by being there for them in this time. From a business standpoint you want to be the sole person a client thinks of when they need something and that can only happen if there is trust and a strong relationship.

2. Know your Audience

Do you remember back in highschool when the whole class failed a quiz and the teacher blamed the class instead of taking accountability and saying maybe its something wrong with the way I taught it. transitioning online as a teacher I don't have the privilege of doing that because if classes are not engaging then they will not come. I can not blame the kids for being bored just like in marketing I have to know my audience and adjust accordingly. one of the rules with marketing is to Experiment, Measure and then Adjust. That means that I put the content out into the world, I measure key performance indicators such as likes, shares and saves and finally, I make adjustments where ever needed. It also helps that I worked with the kids before covid so I have a decent understanding of where they might need help in. We can't control if they come to our zoom meetings but we can control the quality of work that we put out to keep them engaged and coming back.

3.Text Messaging Marketing

We have talked about how we must keep the children engaged and coming back but, we wouldn't even be having this conversation without the support from the parents that helps them get online. The primary way of communication we have been using is texts. As the person who sends out these texts daily I have been using marketing strategies such as sending the texts around the same time everyday and adding an incentive such as a prize to get the families online. I don't think we would be able to get the same results if we used email because with texting them the code to our meeting its a reminder to not forget that we are having virtual programming that day. Even if no one replies I know that they at least saw it because lets be real who isn't on their phone all day?

Have you Found any transferable skills that you have used Online since Covid started ?
